"The sculpture which stands in the park in front of the new Pikkuparlamentti (Small Parliament) was erected to celebrate both the centennial of the Parlament and the introduction of equal and universal suffrage and full political rights for women. The memorial Gone Heroes is from the year 1982 by the well-known female Finnish artist Eila Hiltunen. The free-standing rust-proof steel sculpture is on a granite pedastal. It's abstract composition and shining steel surface makes the sculpture timeless and of somewhat umimposing influence.
The idea for the sculpture came from a women's organisation who made a suggestion to the Parliament in March 2003 that a sculpture should acknowledge the first 19 Finnish female MPs who were elected to Parliament in 1907.

The area that in 1809 became Finland was a group of integral provinces of the Kingdom of Sweden for over 600 years, signifying that also women in Finland were allowed to vote during the Swedish Age of Liberty (1718–1772), when suffrage was granted to tax-paying female members of guilds
The predecessor state of modern Finland, the Grand Duchy of Finland was part of the Russian Empire from 1809 to 1917 and enjoyed a high degree of autonomy. In 1863 taxpaying women were granted municipal suffrage in the countryside, and in 1872, the same reform was given to the cities
The Parliament Act in 1906 established the unicameral parliament of Finland and both women and men were given the right to vote and stand for election. Thus Finnish women became the first in the world to have unrestricted rights both to vote and to stand for parliament. In elections the next year, 19 female MPs, first ones in the world, were elected and women have continued to play a central role in the nation's politics ever since. Miina Sillanpää, a key figure in the worker's movement, became the first female minister in 1926.[citation needed]
Finland's first female President Tarja Halonen was voted into office in 2000 and for a second term in 2006. Since the 2011 parliamentary election, women's representation stands at 42,5%. In 2003 Anneli Jäätteenmäki became the first female Prime Minister of Finland, and in 2007 Matti Vanhanen's second cabinet made history as for the first time there were more women than men in the cabinet of Finland (12 vs. 8).
Finland became one of the first countries to grant women the right to vote, and still today they are among the top countries for women equality. "Finland was voted second in the Global Gender Gap Index in women’s rights." In 2003 the government of Finland proposed addressing issues with gender inequality. They planned to promote gender equality over the entire public administration, reform the Act on Equality that the men and women in Finland share, promote equal pay for work of equal value, increase the number of women in political and economic roles, assessing gender equality from the male point of view, prevent domestic violence and intimate partner violence, protect victims of trafficking and the possibility of criminalizing buying sex. This act is called the Government Action Plan for Gender Equality and it included more than 100 issues that needed discussion."

"Eduskunnan satavuotisjuhlallisuuksien yhteydessä julkistettiin yleiselle ja yhtäläiselle äänioikeudelle omistettu muistomerkki Pikkuparlamentin puistossa. Muistomerkki on Eila Hiltusen Menneet ritarit -veistos vuodelta 1982, jonka eduskunta deponoi Helsingin kaupungille. Graniittisella jalustalla seisova vapaa veistos on tehty ruostumattomasta teräksestä. Abstraktien muotojen sommitelma ja kiiltävän teräksen pinta antaa veistokselle ajattoman ja aineettoman vaikutelman.
Veistos on myös naisten äänioikeuden juhlamuistomerkki. Ehdotus veistoksen pystytyksestä tuli alun perin naisjärjestöjen taholta. "Nuorsuomalaisten tavoitteeksi tuli 1890-luvulla ääniasteikkojen korvaaminen yhtäläisellä äänioikeudella porvaris- ja talonpoikaissäädyssä, joskaan ei vielä yleinen äänioikeus. Naisten äänioikeus nousi valtiopäiväkeskusteluun vasta 1890-luvun jälkipuoliskolla ja ensimmäinen aloite siitä tehtiin vuonna 1897. Vuonna 1884 perustettu Suomen Naisyhdistys oli jo aiemmin vaatinut naisille kunnallista vaalikelpoisuutta ja valtiollista äänioikeutta. Yleistä, yhtäläistä ja välitöntä ääni- ja vaalioikeutta sekä miehille että naisille asettui ensimmäisenä vaatimaan Suomen Työväenpuolue perustavassa kokouksessaan Turussa 1899. Forssan kokouksessa 1903 listalle lisättiin vielä parlamentin yksikamarisuus. Porvarillisista puolueista yleisen ja yhtäläisen äänioikeuden sisällytti ohjelmaansa ensimmäisenä Suomalainen puolue lokakuussa 1904.
Vuosien 1904–1905 valtiopäiville annettiin lakiesitys ääniasteikkojen poistamisesta, mikä olisi tuonut yhtäläisen äänioikeuden aatelittomiin säätyihin. Säätyjen perustuslakivaliokunnan mietinnössä olisi lisäksi annettu myös palkollisille äänioikeus ja naisillekin vaalioikeus, mutta ei vaalikelpoisuutta. Mietintö hyväksyttiin eräin muutoksin talonpoikais- ja pappissäädyssä, mutta aatelis- ja porvarissäädyt eivät ottaneet sitä käsiteltäväkseen, sillä varsinkin ruotsinkieliset perustuslailliset halusivat ”valtiopäivälakkoa” kunnes lailliset olot olisi palautettu. Tämän seurauksena työväenliike otti vuoden 1905 aikana äänioikeustaistelun johdon käsiinsä ja sai mobilisoitua kansanjoukot suuriin mielenosoituksiin vaatimaan yleistä ja yhtäläistä äänioikeutta."
