The port railway tunnel Altona (popularly: Schellfischtunnel) is a disused, 961 m long railway tunnel in Hamburg-Altona. He connected the Hamburg-Altona station with the track below the Geesthang on the Elbe of the former Altonaer Hafenbahn and the Altonaer fishing port.
The single-track tunnel was opened on 18 January 1876 initially with a length of 395 m between the Elbe and the Altona train station. He overcomes a height difference of 30 m. With the transfer of the station Altona north to its present location, the tunnel was extended until 1895 accordingly. It was used exclusively for freight traffic.
Between 1911 and 1954, the Altona port railway was electrified and also had a catenary in the tunnel. However, the voltage in the wet tunnel was limited to 3 kV to avoid sparking and leakage currents.
In the early 1930s, the tunnel vault in the southern section, which dates back to 1876, was completely renewed. The tunnel was unofficially used as an air raid shelter during the air raids during the Second World War by many Altonaers.
After 1992, the last commercial user Transthermos relocated its operation, the port railway was shut down and closed the tunnel on its south portal with an iron grid.
