"If you find yourself walking as far as the Lesser Town Square you should not overlook one of its sights. Today we will stop and learn about the Holy Trinity Column which raises close to St. Nicolas Church. Let´s explore the reasons of its origin and what this column reflects.
Who participated in the work?
The whole monument comes from the workshop of the significant sculpturer Jan Oldrich Mayer and the two masons, František Wolfgang Herstorfer and Giovanni Battista Alliprandi were concerned, too. The complete project was realized by the last of the gentlemen.
What was behind its origin?
Like other plague colums also this one was created as an expression of gratitude for the fact that the plague epidemy in Prague during which many people died was over in 1713. The Lesser Town councillors got the column created in 1715, however some plastics were not added until the famine in 1772. The huge pedestal itself is made of sandstone and reaches 20 metres high. The sandstone is decorated with black and red marble.
What everything can we see here?
The whole column is formed by a roll with three pedestals, a long triangular pyramid is placed at the very to
p. If you take a closer look at this unique gem of the whole square you have a chance to see the figure of Virgin Mary in the middle. In her surroundings you can further see the figures of Bohemian patrons . There are images of St. Wenceslas, St. Adalbert, St. Ludmila, St. John of Nepomuk and St. Prokop here. The Godly Eye and a Dove, the symbol of the Holy trinity beneath it, are placed at the top of the column. Just to be more accurate, the Holy Trinity means the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. On the banister pedestal a line of tiny angel plastics is placed and each of them carries a certain board with a writing.
A curiosity
Among the matters of interest that the curious eyes of the tourists won´t overlook belong the little side fountains. Three of them contain the reservoirs The Sources of Life, Blessing and Salvation. So the water springs from the spouts into the tanks that look like lion heads."
