The town of Votice lies at the end of a large valley at the foot of the Cerenská mountain, 59 km south of Prague. The history of Votice began in the 12th century when a settlement called Otice, which sprung up around a fortress, became the trading and economic centre of the area. During the Hussite wars (1420–1436) the town joined the Hussites which (contrary to other towns) saved it from devastation.

Later the Unity of the Brethren had a great influence over the town. In the mid 16th century the town acquired its present name. In 1850 Votice became a district town (and remained as such until 1960), but this did not alter its provincial nature.

The most notable monuments include the Church of St. Wenceslas built in the 14th century and rebuilt in Baroque style, the Baroque monastery Church of St. Francis from the first half of the 17th century, and the old Renaissance chateau which underwent extensive refurbishment in the 18th century. In the square you can admire the town hall dating from the end of the 17th century. The Jewish cemetery founded before 1538 is another valuable historical site in Votice. The oldest legible tombstone is from 1716.


Sezima of Vrtba (visit link) gave the impulse for the construction of the monastery, which began in 1627. The buildings, on typical square ground plans and attached to a church, are fairly well preserved. The St Francis of Assisi Gallery of Sacred Art has been opened in a reconstructed wing.
