Inspiré d'une iconographie païenne, le Zodiaque étonne souvent par sa présence sur le chevet d'une église, partie la plus sacrée généralement dédiée aux saints ou à la Vierge. Cependant, dans l'iconographie chrétienne, le Zodiaque symbolise le cycle temps qui rythme les saisons et dicte aux Hommes leur travail quotidien.

Ce cycle zodiacal, réalisé par des sculpteurs auvergnats, témoigne d'un savoir-faire exceptionnel. Les visages antiquisants des personnages sont ornés de cheveux bouclés très détaillés ; les pupilles des yeux, percées au trépan, confèrent aux regards un réalisme surprenant.

Inspired by pagan iconography, the presence of the zodiac on the apse of a church, its most sacred part generally dedicated to the saints or the Virgin Mary, can be surprising. However, in the Christian iconograpy, the zodiac symbolizes the cycle of time which defines the seasons and dictates the daily work of Men.

The zodiac cycle, crafted by the sculptors of Auvergne, is testimony to their exceptional know-how. The antiquated faces of personalities are embellished with detailed locks of curly hair ; the pupils in the eyes, pierced by a drill bit, gives them a surprising realism.
