The named after the eponymous ridge plant was opened in 1878. It is the only facility of its kind in Thuringia and has recently been used for festivals.

Since 1842, horse racing has taken place on the site, which was actually a parade ground. Under the sponsorship of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha 1878 Central German Rennverein was founded with the aim of establishing a racecourse on the 80-acre site. In the following years, the still existing complex was built with a wooden grandstand built in English style.

Originally the track was built in 1878 for flat and obstacle races. Thus Boxberg experienced its heyday even before the First World War. At the beginning of the First World War, the obstacles were removed and the terrain used for agriculture. It was not until 1928 that the obstacle course was rebuilt. In addition, thoroughbred races were started with the aim of raising the national horse breeding. With the construction of the Thuringian Forest Railway in 1929, the racecourse got its own stop and thus an easier accessibility for the many visitors.

During the Second World War, no horse races were performed, but after its end there were regular races back in 1946. For this purpose, the cooperative for thoroughbred breeding and race Thuringia e. V. founded. However, this was expropriated in 1953, the system went into public ownership. In 1961, the state's own stud Boxberg. In contrast to other racing courses in the GDR, mainly amateur races were held on the Boxberg in the following years.

After the turnaround, races were again held for the first time in 1991, this time galloped and trotting races in combination, now under the direction of the newly founded racing club for Central Germany.

In 2000, the re-privatization of the racecourse Boxberg with the acquisition of the site by a corporation.

Until 2011 there were regular horse races with English and Arab thoroughbred horses as well as pony, riding horse and hunting races. Annually, two to five days of racing were organized between May and September. For financial reasons, in particular because of the lack of sponsors, no races took place in 2012 and 2013. [1] In addition to the horse races, the area is used for festivals such as the Freakstock and other events.
