"Indiana's Center for Science, Mathematics and Technology" has something for everyone. It's definitely a discover-it-yourself museum, with areas for all ages. As you enter Science Central, you are greeted with a "Jacob's Ladder" and a model railroad display that YOU can run! Ascending the stairway to the upper floor treats you to a symphony of sound, as the stairway is set up to play a sound for each stair you step on. Inside you can learn about how weather is made, how water works, the growing patterns of reptiles, how gravity works (and doesn't!) and how to use your senses of touch and hearing to navigate in the dark at their various displays. Explore pulleys, bungee cords and elasticity, mass, and sound. Take a vision test, encounter several optical illusions, and ride a slide - all at Fort Wayne's Science Central.
In addition to the regular displays, they also have educational programs and demonstrations on a regular basis, including "How Electricity Works" with a Van de Graff generator.
The building was orginally the City Light & Power power plant. It produced power for the city of Fort Wayne until 1975, when it was shut down. It was leased to another company until 1991, when it was handed over to Science Central. It has 5 smokestacks on the top of the building, which are now painted in bright colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Blue.
Science Central opened its doors as a science discovery center in 1995 and has been serving the community's intellect and sense of discovery and wonder ever since.
