As the ceasefire was considered between the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the Israeli forces in Lebanon, a multinational peacekeeping force was created in 1982. On 23 October 1983 in Beirut, suicide bombers killed 299 French and American peacekeepers, members of that multinational group.

The first and largest Beirut Memorial is in Jacksonville, North Carolina. See waymark WMNCV2. The Massachusetts Beirut Memorial was dedicated in 1992.
