Deze hofstede was in de zestiende eeuw eigendom van ridder Jacob Oem van Wijngaarden, tevens eigenaar van kasteel Ter Lips.

Geschiedenis
Het goed transformeerde na 1634 tot een buitenplaats, bestaande uit een hofstede voorzien van verscheidene kamers en vertrekken, koetshuis, paardenstal, tuinmanshuis, boomgaarden, plantagies, laan en verder getimmerten.

Rond 1700 is de buitenplaats aanpast aan de toen heersende smaak, onder meer door de aanleg van een barok tuin in formele stijl. Hekpijlers met schildhoudende vazen en het smeedijzeren hekwerk markeert nog steeds de toenmalige entree. Van de twee in de middenas van het landhuis geplaatste speelhuizen heeft die aan de Heerweg tot in de jaren 1960 bestaan. De andere stond langs de Vliet.

Aan het begin van de de 19e eeuw liet men het huis verbouwen in neoclassicistische trant en een park aanleggen in landschapsstijl. Ouder wellicht is het moestuinen complex met een aantal oude tuinmuren, dat nog steeds als moestuin wordt gebruikt.

In 1879 werd op Bijdorp het Rooms Katholieke Instituut Onze Lieve Vrouw van Lourdes gevestigd om 'jonge Juffrouwen van deftige stand een beschaafde en tevens godsdienstige opleiding te geven'. Er werd een noviciaat gebouwd en in 1895 kwam de neogotische kapel gereed.

Ten behoeve van de onderwijsfunctie, die het klooster tot 1984 heeft behouden, werd er in 1938 een schoolvleugel bijgebouwd, waardoor een U-vormig complex ontstond.

Huidige situatie
Het inrijhek, uit 1697,aan de Veurseweg is een rijksmonument.
Het bos met de waterpartij aan de straatzijde is een restant van de 19e eeuwse parkaanleg.

Huidige doeleinden
Tot op heden wordt Bijdorp gebruikt als tehuis voor bejaarde nonnen, waarvoor in 1995 een ingrijpende renovatie heeft plaatsgevonden.

Bijdorp heeft geen monumentstatus en het terrein is niet toegankelijk.
De toegevoegde luchtfoto heb ik ooit gekregen toen ik de school verliet. Het gebouw is nog grotendeels hetzelfde de omgeving is echter radicaal veranderd.

This homestead was owned by knight Jacob Oem van Wijngaarden in the sixteenth century, who also owned the Ter Lips castle in Voorschoten.

History
The estate transformed after 1634 into an estate, consisting of a farmstead with several rooms, coach house, stable, gardener's house, orchards, plantagies, avenue and further woodwork.

Around 1700, the estate was adapted to the then prevailing taste, partly due to the construction of a baroque garden in formal style. Fence pillars with shielded vases and the wrought iron fence still marks the entrance of that time.

In 1879 the Onze-Lieve Vrouw van Lourdes Roman Catholic Institute was established at Bijdorp to give 'young Misses of fine attire a civilized and also religious education'. A noviciate was built and in 1895 the neo-Gothic chapel was completed.

For the purpose of the educational function, which the monastery maintained until 1984, a school wing was added in 1938, creating a U-shaped complex.

Current situation
The entrance gate, dating from 1697, on the Veurseweg is a national monument.
The forest with the water feature on the street side is a remnant of the 19th century park construction.

Current purpose
To date, Bijdorp has been used as a home for elderly nuns, for which a major renovation took place in 1995.

Bijdorp has no monument status and the site is not accessible

Interesting personal detail: I had classes in the school, which was part of the Monastry, in the eighties. We had x-mas celebrations in the monastrychurch.
The areal photo was a present for us when we left school. The building has not changed, the surroundings has.
