La chapelle datant du XIII et XVIIeme siecle est située à l’intérieur du cimetière de St Junien, la chapelle est ouverte lors des Journées du Patrimoine et à l’occasion d’expositions ponctuelles, seules occasions de découvrir son mobilier dont un retable, récemment rénové. Dédiée tour à tour à Sainte-Madeleine, puis au mystérieux Saint-Guignefort, elle fut également le siège des Pénitents bleus.
La chapelle est ouverte à la visite pour les journées du patrimoine et pendant la période estivale

Le cimetière de St Junien est le seul de la ville. Il est constitué: -de concessions funeraires. Le droit à concession est réservé aux familles habitant dans la commune ou qui disposent déjà d’une sépulture dans le cimetière ou aux personnes décédées sur le territoire de la commune quel que soit leur domicile.

-D'un jardin du souvenir pour y dispersé les cendres .

C’est à partir de 1611 que la confrérie des Pénitents Bleus s’établit dans la Chapelle du cimetière, dédiée à Sainte Madeleine, dont les premières mentions datent de 1281.
Les Pénitents Bleus avaient le visage couvert dans le but de ne pas se faire reconnaître de la population locale lors de leurs processions. Ils avaient pour mission de réaliser auprès des nécessiteux de bonnes actions telles que des dons d’argent et de l’aide mortuaire. Il s’agissait de personnes fortunées qui eurent une fonction active avant la Révolution. Plus tard, ils furent reconnus par l’évêque et l’église.
Dissoute en 1792, la confrérie reprit ses activités en 1804 pour finalement disparaître peu après 1850.

La procession des pénitents est reconstituée tous les 7 ans lors des Ostensions Limousines (classées au patrimoine immatériel par l’UNESCO), une période de festivités qui consistent en l’exposition publique des reliques de saints et de saintes du Limousin.
