The Trail:

East Frisia hiking trail is the name of a regional hiking trail of the Wiehengebirgsverband Weser-Ems. With a length of about 97 kilometers, it is the longest and oldest hiking trail in East Frisia. The difficulty of the way is easy, because there is hardly any climb. In total, hikers manage a height difference of 12 meters on the four to five day march route.
The trail runs partly along the route of the former narrow-gauge railway Leer-Aurich-Wittmund and is part of the European long-distance hiking trail E9. This was shut down on 31 December 1969. In the following years, the tracks were removed. The former route was expanded in the late 1970s as Ostfrieslandwanderweg. The path is signposted and marked with a white "O" on a black background.

The Rail:

The narrow-gauge railway Leer-Aurich-Wittmund led in meter gauge from Leer via Aurich to Esens and Bensersiel. A branch line led from Ogenbargen to Wittmund.
The small train thus opened up the East Frisian peninsula, whose inhabitants on the one hand deliver agricultural products to the cities via this transport route and on the other hand were able to supply them with technical goods and colonial goods.
In the vernacular, the narrow-gauge railway with a typical East Frisian word creation was called Jan Klein (Jan Little).

The route was opened in 1898 and shut down in 1969. Thereafter, in the late 1970s, the conversion to the trail began.
