The "Alte Marktweg" (Old market road) was part of the Ox Road, an ancient trackway linking Denmark to the Netherlands. He was an international land association for stock market information, cattle trading and also served as a pilgrimage route.
The origins of the Ochsenweg are probably in the Bronze Age. The path was mainly on the dry part of the two important natural landscapes of the Kimbrian Peninsula, the Geest of the Baltic Ridge in the east and the Geestrand as access to the marshes in the west. Here the important metals copper and tin were transported.
Until the 19th century cattle from Jutland and the Danish islands were driven to the fattening areas in the North Sea marches of the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein, East and West Frisia. There they were fat-fed until sold as slaughter cattle.
In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, the Ochsenweg was also an important pilgrim route that led people from northern Europe, especially to Italy.
At the beginning of the "Alte Marktweg", starting from the street "Schäferei", this boulder with bronze plate reminds of this now meaningless ancient trackway.
