The game of golf was thought to have been played in the town of Forfar even earlier than the eighteenth century but records show of a rudimentary course being used in the town towards the end of that century and into the next one before land was found a mile and a half east of the town on the Arbroath Road and the course opened in 1871 having been designed by Old Tom Morris. The club used a room at Lochhead Farm on the north-east corner of the site originally, before moving to the current site on the north-west corner.
The old photograph was taken in 1932 for the cover of the programme for the Scottish Professional Golf Championship Tournament, played in June of that year. The photo is taken on top of the hill 100 yards short of the 18th green looking northwards towards the green and the clubhouse beyond. The small building to the left is the Professional's Shop.
The site remained the same until the 1970s when the clubhouse was redesigned and extended, with the pro's shop being moved some fifty yards to the right (east), and the original building now on the site of the dining room as can be seen on the current photograph.
