After all, the bridge was not as old as they said. Until the beginning of the 20th century it was known as the new bridge, but from 1910 to 1920 it began to be called Ponte Velha because of the great works carried out in 1955 on an existing bridge downstream. This oldest, was built in the first half of the seventeenth century, in the middle of 1630/1635, in the reign of Philip III that gorvenou Portugal from 1621 to 1640.
The said new bridge was designed in the year 1887 by the engineer viseence, Arthur Calheiros. On December 27, 1879, a contract was signed with the Chamber of the Municipality of Fráguas, in the presence of President Manuel da Costa Pereira, whose minutes were signed on December 28, signed by the clerk of the Chamber, Augusto de Sá Marques Figueiredo.
The bridge has a length of 53 meters: 15 meters from the river bed, 18 meters at the meeting on the right bank and 19 meters at the meeting on the left bank.
