[EN] "This lighthouse was selected in 1834 as J.C.J. van Speijkmonument, in memory of Lieutenant-ter-sea Van Speijk, who preferred to fly in the air rather than hand his ship over to the Belgian enemy. He stockpiled gunpowder on board on 5 February 1831. In addition to Van Speijk, 25 other crew members and a number of Belgians died as a result of the explosion.
The lighthouse was financed with the proceeds of the auction of relics and remains of the gunboat and personal belongings of the crew. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam bought part of Van Speijk's blood-stained ship's jacket and his knife. The monument was designed by J.D. Zocher and built by J. Bos. The material used is natural stone.
The worship of Jan van Speijk was not the only one. The Royal Decree stipulates that one of the vessels of the Dutch fleet will bear the name 'Van Speijk'. The current 'No. Ms. Van Speijk' (F828) is a multi-purpose frigate of the Charles Doorman Class and came into service in 1995."
