[EN] The Vice-Admiral Ernst Schirlitz, in charge of the command on the Atlantic coast becomes August 20, 1944 commander of the area of La Rochelle. Like all the other commanders of these fortified places, Schirlitz ordered, in case he was unable to withstand enemy attacks, to destroy all the port facilities of La Rochelle and La Pallice. He had 18,000 men under his command (naval units, land forces and German civilians working in the arsenals).

This area included the town of Lagord that's why the castle of Clavier quickly becomes one of the many German headquarters of the region. Thus, the park of the Castle of Clavier includes 18 blockhouses which were used for the storage of bombs and torpedoes.
