Pedro Ansúrez (c. 10371-Valladolid, September 9, 11192) was count in Liébana, Carrión and Saldaña, and Lord of Valladolid, in whose cathedral is buried.
A member of the Banu Gómez lineage, a family documented since the tenth century in the north of Palencia and in Liébana, he was the son of tycoon Ansur Díaz and his first wife Eylo, and his father, Ansur Díaz, had been entrusted with education. As a knight of the future King Alfonso VI of León, who spent long periods during his youth in the land of the nobleman along with his sons, among them Pedro Ansúrez, he assumed the leadership of the house of the Banu Gómez around 1057 on the death of his Uncle Gómez Díaz, Count of Saldaña.
Invested with the Count's dignity towards 1068, when he confirmed a document of King Alfonso VI as Petrus Assuriz, you eat, he was entrusted with several tenures that he ruled by order of the king, including Carrión (from 1074), San Román de Entrepeñas (1077) - shared ownership with his brother Diego-as well as Saldaña. From 1084, he also ruled Zamora y Toro, and from 1101 that of Liébana On his return to the Kingdom of León after remaining in the county of Urgel after the death of his son-in-law Count Armengol, he returned to rule from December 1109 until his death Carrión, Saldaña and San Román and in 1113 the king entrusted him with the government of the squares of Melgar, Simancas and Cabezón, as well as Torremormojón shortly before his death.
He was one of the nobles closest to King Alfonso VI, whom he accompanied in 1072 to his exile in Toledo and to whom the king entrusted the custody and education of his daughter Urraca after the betrothal of the young Infanta, the future Queen Magpie of Leon, with Count Raimundo de Borgoña, until he reached the age to marry, which took place in 1095. Years later, the monarch entrusted Pedro Ansúrez and his wife, Mrs. Eylo, with the repopulation of Valladolid, which they did people from the counties of Saldaña and Carrión.
When Count Ansúrez arrived as lord and governor of Valladolid, there were already two parishes, an insignificant defensive enclosure and a fence. There was also a civic organization or council. The two parishes were San Miguel and San Julián, both with their respective houses forming parishes or collations. The fence must have been of low height, more like a palisade, the concilium that Count Ansúrez had already established and addressed in the charter and other documents, was the germ of what was later called "Council »And finally« Community ».
However, the growth of the city did not occur until Alfonso VI granted the lordship of the same to the count, developing greatly during his life. Pedro had a palace built for him and his wife, which is not preserved. He also built a hospital, a bridge over the river Pisuerga (main bridge), as well as the church of Santa María La Antigua and the collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor, which he and his wife Eylo endowed on May 21, 1095.
Pedro owned the land that at that time was bordering with the kingdom of Castile, and that went from Liébana to Cuéllar, where there are also news of his repopulations.
When his daughter Maria of her husband, the count of Urgel, Armengol V (who died on September 14, 1102 fighting the Muslims in Mollerusa), Pedro Ansúrez moved to the Pyrenean county as protector of his grandson Armengol VI. There he lived between 1102 and 1108 and took an active part along with Ramón Berenguer III in the conquest of Balaguer.
After the death of Alfonso VI in 1108, the crown falls on his daughter Urraca I so that, to strengthen their position, this contracted marriage with the King of Aragon Alfonso I the Battler. This link will take place in 1109 in the castle of Monzón de Campos (Palencia), whose tenure was in the hands of Pedro Ansúrez, who acted as godfather. In the conflicts arising from this marriage, Pedro Ansúrez will take a position in favor of the Aragonese exercising the sovereignty of the kingdom, despite the fact that it was Maggiore the owner queen.
Its last appearance in the medieval documentation was the 9 of December of 1117 when, along with his wife Elvira Sanchez, donated to the monastery of San Isidro de Dueñas, the half of an inheritance in Valhenoso, in the territory of Trigueros, by the remedy of its soul and that of his late wife Countess Eylo. He died on September 9, 1119 and was buried in the cathedral of Valladolid, on one side of the chapel of the apse of the nave of the Gospel.
