The railway opened in 1866. Although a busy commuter line, it was axed with the Beeching cuts in 1966. Ironically, Dr Beeching lived near Forest Row and regularly travelled up to London on the line when he was Chairman of British Rail.
East Sussex County Council bought the line in 1971 and it was designated as a Country Park in 1974. In 2002, following improvements to the surfaced track Forest Way became part of the National Cycle Network.
The Park is owned by East Sussex County Council and managed by the Rights of Way & Countryside Maintenance team.

Rail-to-Trail Sign: Forest Way Country Park is a 15km (9 mile) shared-use route running between East Grinstead through East Sussex to Groombridge on the Kent/East Sussex border. It passes through the beautiful High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The route follows the disused East Grinstead, Groombridge, & Tunbridge Wells Railway line, which opened in 1866 and cosed in 1967 as part of the reforms proposed by the then British Rail Chairman, Dr. Beeching. Dr. Beeching lived alongside the railway at East Grinstead.
Combined with the Worth Way, walkers, cyclists and horse riders have access to a 27 km (17 mile) route through the High Weald. There are also links to he High Weald Landscape Trail, Sussex Border Path, and the wider Rights of Way network. The route forms part of the national cycle route number 21.
Bylaws apply to the Forest Way and Worth Way.
West Sussex County Council manages the Forest Way from East Grinstead to the County boundary. The rest of the route is managed by East Sussex County Council.
