Throughout the gold rush, Bodie was a thriving town. By 1879, its population exceeded 10,000 and it was second to none for wickedness, badmen and "the worst climate out of doors." One little girl, whose family was taking her to the remote and infamous town wrote in her diary: "Goodbye God, I’m going to Bodie." The phrase came to be known throughout the west.

One church and one school house had a hard stand against 65 saloons, and consequently, Bodie’s first school house, two blocks up from this location didn’t last long until it was burned down by an early-day juvenile delinquent.

This building, built in 1879 was originally a lodging house. It was in use until the end of Bodie’s days. Today, the town, including the school house is part of Bodie State Historic Park. It is a fun place to visit.
