The Wisdom of the Forest

Believe me, because I have learned: You will find more in the woods than in the books. Trees and stones will teach you things that no teacher can tell you.
(Bernard of Clairvaux; translated from German)
This famous quote is by the Cistercian monk Bernard of Clairvaux (about 1090 - 1153). He was a crusader preacher and significantly instrumental in spreading the Cistercian Order in Europe. The quote testifies to the relation of the Order towards nature and the belief in God's creation.

The quote was immortalized here on the Dollendorfer Hardt on a block of stone that has been embedded in the ground on the edge of a hiking trail. The place has been chosen to match the quote, because many different trees grow here and old, moss-covered stones lie here.

The Dollendorfer Hardt is at 246 meters altitude the northernmost mountain of the Siebengebirge. It is mostly wooded, on the western slope above Oberdollendorf are vineyards. Many hiking trails invite you to explore the nature.
