history of the Mothe Saint Heray:
This village (1850 inhabitants today) is the result of the reunification of two villages at the beginning of the 15th century: La Mothe, the oldest, medieval motte built to fight against the Normans who went to Melle, and Saint-Héray (formerly "Sensiac") dating from the grouping in the 6th century of farming families around Aredius which gave its name to the village. It was the grand nephew of Clovis who had acquired a country house there. castle of the mothe
At Sensiac he had built an oratory which, because of Aredius' notoriety, had soon become too small; moreover, the floods of Sèvre had led the population to consider the construction of a larger sanctuary, the present church of the borough, erected in 1498, ex nihilo which is not very current. Although built in the Gothic period (which is rare in the region), it has corner buttresses and its facade is very sober. Inside, the keystones are the coat of arms of families of lords mothais who contributed to its edification. It has three naves of equal height which makes it bright. To the right of the entrance, the flat falls from the entrails of Henri de Baudéan. This building is classified, apart from the bell tower which dates from the early twentieth century.
Two hundred meters down is the Moulin du Pont l'Abbé, more commonly known as Moulin l'Abbé. The presence of a mill is attested since the 11th century, owned by Jean de Torsay, a unifying of the Mothaises lands. In the eighteenth century, it has two millstones: one for white flour and the other for mixing flour. In 1920, the owner of the time, Ludovic Gelin, develops it into a flour mill; it will operate until 1959. Acquired by the city in 1988, the mill restored by volunteers comes to life, and its premises now house the Tourist Office, the library and a youth room. The mill section has been transformed into a museum.
Around the Moulin l'Abbé has been landscaped a botanical garden crossed by the Sévre.
To reach the Orangery, located in La Mothe, at the other end of the village, you can take the "path of the secret gardens" which also borders the Sévre and represents a refreshing and country walk. This elegant building (of "tricolor" style - the white of the stone - the pink of the brick - and the gray of the slate) dates from 1640 and is the work of Nicolas Tillon, Richelieu master-mason who also built the 2 pavilions, today again connected to the Orangery by 2 wooden galleries. The first floor of the Orangerie served as a reception room and Prince Murat, Napoleon's brother-in-law, gave a ball in 1805; it was his farewell party before reaching Naples where his brother-in-law had sent him.
It is the lower part that gave its name to the ensemble; it is home again during the winter orange, lemon and other shrubs fearing frost.
A very important rehabilitation program recently made it possible to restore some of the aspect that the ensemble had in the 17th century: the French gardens were recreated and the grand canal was rebuilt on which lords' time was given time. mothais of sumptuous holidays.
Nothing remains of the castle: the wooden donjon had been replaced by a magnificent stone castle, with openings when the threats of invasions mentioned above had been removed. Nothing remains of it but one can however see at the Museum of Agesci de Niort woodwork saved from the chapel of the castle. They are painted and represent biblical scenes.

Ce bourg (de 1850 habitants aujourd’hui) résulte de la réunification de deux bourgs au début du XV ème siècle : la Mothe, le moins ancien, motte médiévale érigée pour lutter contre les Normands qui allèrent jusqu’à Melle, et Saint-Héray (auparavant « Sensiac ») datant du regroupement au VI ème siècle de familles d’agriculteurs autour d’Arédius qui a donné son nom au bourg. C’était le petit-neveu de Clovis qui avait acquis là une maison de campagne. chateau de la mothe
A Sensiac il avait fait construire un oratoire qui, du fait de la notoriété d’Aredius, était vite devenu trop petit ; de plus, les crues de la Sèvre avaient amené la population à envisager la construction d’un sanctuaire plus grand, l’actuelle église du bourg, érigée en 1498, ex nihilo ce qui n’est pas très courant. Bien que construite à l’époque gothique (ce qui est rare dans la région) , elle comporte des contreforts d’angle et sa façade est très sobre. A l’intérieur, on note aux clefs de voûte les armoiries de familles de seigneurs mothais ayant contribué à son édification. Elle a trois nefs d’égale hauteur ce qui la rend lumineuse. A droite de l’entrée, la plate tombe des entrailles d’Henri de Baudéan. Cet édifice est classé, mis à part le clocher qui date du début du XX ème siècle.
Deux cents mètres plus bas se trouve le Moulin du Pont l’Abbé, plus communément appelé Moulin l’Abbé . La présence d’un moulin est attestée depuis le XI ème siècle, propriété de Jean de Torsay, unificateur des terres mothaises. Au XVIII ème siècle, il a deux meules : une pour les farines blanches et l’autre pour les farines de mélange. En 1920, le propriétaire de l’époque, Ludovic Gelin, l’aménage en minoterie ; elle fonctionnera jusqu’en 1959. Acquis par la ville en 1988, le moulin restauré par des bénévoles reprend vie, et ses locaux abritent aujourd’hui le Syndicat d’Initiative, la bibliothèque et une salle des jeunes. La partie moulin a été transformée en musée.
Autour du Moulin l’Abbé a été aménagé un jardin botanique traversé par la Sévre.
Pour rejoindre l’Orangerie, située à La Mothe donc à l’autre bout du bourg, on peut emprunter le « chemin des jardins secrets » qui borde également la Sévre et représente une promenade rafraîchissante et champêtre. Cet élégant bâtiment (de style « tricolore »-le blanc de la pierre- le rose de la brique – et le gris de l’ardoise) date de 1640 et est l’œuvre de Nicolas Tillon, maître-maçon de Richelieu qui a aussi construit les 2 pavillons, aujourd’hui de nouveau reliés à l’Orangerie par 2 galeries en bois. Le premier étage de l’Orangerie servait de salle de réception et le Prince Murat, beau-frère de Napoléon, y a donné un bal en 1805 ; c’était sa fête d’adieu avant de rejoindre Naples où son beau-frère l’avait envoyé.
C’est la partie basse qui a donné son nom à l’ensemble ; elle abrite de nouveau pendant l’hiver les orangers, citronniers et autres arbustes craignant le gel.
Un très important programme de réhabilitation a permis récemment de redonner une partie de l’aspect qu’avait l’ensemble au XVII ème siècle : ainsi ont été recréés les jardins à la française et recreusé le grand canal sur lequel se donnaient du temps des seigneurs mothais des fêtes somptueuses.
Du château, il ne reste rien : le donjon en bois avait été remplacé par un magnifique château en pierre, doté d’ouvertures quand les menaces d’invasions dont il a été question plus haut s’étaient éloignées. Une puissante enceinte de pierre l’entourait : elle a disparu au XIX ème siècle. C’est à cette époque, en 1842 exactement, que le château a été vendu par son propriétaire, pierre par pierre !
Il n’en reste rien mais on peut cependant voir au Musée d’Agesci de Niort des boiseries sauvées de la chapelle du château. Elles sont peintes et représentent des scènes bibliques.
Pour revenir vers l’église, on empruntera l’allée du Parc, reste de la promenade d’agrément des châtelains. A mi-chemin, on notera une grotte avec une scène et un terre-plein. Ces aménagements ont été réalisés à la fin du XIXème siècle pour servir de cadre au Théâtre Populaire Poitevin, théâtre de plein air créé par un descendant homonyme de Pierre Corneille pour servir de cadre aux pièces de sa composition.
Ainsi, de 1897 à 1939, cet auteur a fait jouer ses pièces à thème historique par des acteurs mothais, toutes origines confondues. La partie musicale était d’un autre Mothais, Louis Giraudias. Ces représentations étaient données dans le cadre des Fêtes des Rosières, le premier week - end de Septembre. Cette fête, la seule subsistant en France qui soit un véritable mariage civil puis religieux, est l’occasion tous les ans d’honorer une jeune fille méritante en lui donnant une dot.
D’autres découvertes peuvent être faites au fil des rues de ce petit bourg agréable : il suffit souvent de lever la tête…
