EN: The Church of St. Peter and Paul is located on a hill in the north of the municipality on the border with Dulliken.
Above the entrance, it is dated 1816, but this only applies to its present form: at that time, the church, damaged in 1812, was repaired and enlarged. The main part of the building dates back to 1671. But also that church had predecessors in the same place for several centuries. Its origins date back to the 8th century, making it the oldest church in the region. In 1036 the church and the village named after it were first mentioned in a document.
The adjacent rectory dates back to 1679 and is largely preserved in its original state.
In the 1870s, the church played an important role in the church history of Switzerland. From the opposition to the Pope dogmas decided at the first Vatican Council, a secession from the Roman Catholic Church originated, the Christian-Catholic Church of Switzerland. This development began with Pastor Paulin Gschwind in Starrkirchen-Wil; the Church has been Christian-Catholic since 1874.
DE: Die Kirche St. Peter und Paul befindet sich auf einem Hügel im Norden der Gemeinde an der Grenze zu Dulliken.
Über dem Eingang ist sie mit 1816 datiert, das gilt aber nur für ihre heutige Gestalt: damals wurde die 1812 bei einem Brand beschädigte Kirche erpariert und vergrössert. Der Hauptteil des Gebäudes stammt aus dem Jahr 1671. Die Kirche hatte aber schon seit mehreren Jahrhunderten Vorgänger an der selben Stelle. Ihre Ursprünge reichen ins 8. Jahrhundert zurück, damit ist es die älteste Kirche der Region. Im Jahr 1036 wurde sie und das nach ihr benannte Dorf das erstemal urkundlich erwähnt.
Das benachbarte Pfarrhaus stammt aus dem Jahr 1679 und ist weit gehend in seinem Originalzustand erhalten.
In den 1870er Jahren spielte die Kirche eine wichtige Rolle in der Kirchengeschichte der Schweiz. Aus dem Widerstand gegen die am ersten Vatikanischen Konzil beschlossenen Papstdogmen entstand eine Abspaltung der römisch-katholischen Kirche, die christkatholische Kirche der Schweiz. Diese Entwicklung begann mit Pfarrer Paulin Gschwind in Starrkirchen-Wil; die Kirche ist seit 1874 christkatholisch.
