Going south down Mariastraat from The Church of Our Lady the first building beyond the canal bridge on the left is Katelijnestraat, 1. On the north wall of no.1 at the second storey is what's left of a large painted scroll advertising the function of the building - CANOT'S HOTELxx. Only the top-most part of the sign is readable.
The shop now occupying this site is a sovenir shop, 'Oud St-Jan', selling lace, postcards, t-shirts, etc. The next door, no.3, is a 'Flemish Stew House' Take away & Eat inn also selling ice cream. The style of the windows and doors of the two establishments is similar showing their common ancestry.
