It was manufactured in 1855 and may have seen action in the Civil War though no one has been able to provide documentation saying so. One of 16 surplus cannons secured for the state by Sen. Wesley L. Jones, the big gun was a gift to the city from a veterans group. It was installed in the park in 1915, and dedicated on Sept. 11 of that year. On Sept. 11, 1998, it was rededicated on a new pedestal and site at the park.
