EN: Hans Herzog (1819-1894) was a Swiss officer and commander-in-chief of the Swiss Army. He served in 1846 as a volunteer in the Württemberg artillery and participated as an officer in the Sonderbund War in 1847. In 1860 he was promoted to colonel. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he became the general and commander-in-chief of the Swiss Army. He was best known for the disarming and internment of the Bourbaki army. This French army, defeated by German troops, crossed the Swiss border in February 1871 and requested political asylum. 87,000 hungry and cold soldiers (3% of the then Swiss population) had to be distributed throughout Switzerland and taken care of. From 1875 until his death he was artillery chief of weapons.

Since the late 19th century there were plans for a monument for General Herzog in Aarau. The architect Karl Moser proposed to erect a relief over the entrance to the arsenal instead of a statue. The relief was created in 1915 by Hermann Haller. It shows Hans Herzog in uniform on horseback. Under the relief is the coat of arms of the canton of Aargau. On both sides of the gate are the inscriptions: "General Hans Herzog" and "MDCCCLXX MDCCCLXXI"

The old arsenal is located on the northern edge of the barracks east of the old town of Aarau. The house was built in 1775 under Bernese rule as a granary. In 1818 it was converted into an arsenal and in 1933 to the canteen of the barracks.

Diese von deutschen Truppen geschlagene französische Armee überquerte im Februar 1871 die Schweizer Grenze und bat um politisches Asyl. 87'000 durch Hunger und Kälte gezeichnete Soldaten (3 % der damaligen Schweizer Bevölkerung) mussten auf die ganze Schweiz verteilt und betreut werden. Von 1875 bis zu seinem Tod war er Waffenchef der Artillerie.

Schon seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert gab es in Aarau Pläne für ein Denkmal für General Herzog. Der Architekt Karl Moser schlug vor statt einer Statue, ein Relief über dem Eingang des Zeughauses zu errichten. Das Relief wurde 1915 von Hermann Haller geschaffen. Es zeigt Hans Herzog in Uniform zu Pferd. Unter dem relief befindet sich das Wappen des Kantons Aargau. Zu beiden Seiten des Tors befinden sich die Inschriften: "General Hans Herzog" und "MDCCCLXX MDCCCLXXI"

Das Alte Zeughaus befindet sich am Nordrand der Kaserne östlich der Altstadt von Aarau. Das Haus wurde 1775 unter Bernischer Herrschaft als Kornhaus erbaut. 1818 wurde es zum Zeughaus und 1933 zur Kantine der Kasernen umgebaut.
