Enosis is the term used to describe the amalgamation of all former Greek territories back into the then-Kingdom of Greece and the present-day Hellenic Republic, after the War of Independence in the 1830's.
The monument, consisting of a 4 meter tall limestone centre piece surrounded by 2 meter tall blocks on one side, commemorates the joining of Corfu with the Kingdom of Greece after hundreds of years of foreign occupation by the Romans, Venetians, and finally the British.
The outlying slabs feature bronze reliefs of Greek gods such as Poseidon.
