Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg is regarded as the last of the great Generals of the Venetian Republic. He organized the successful defence of Corfu against the Turkish invasion of 1716. His prowess and leadership was the driving force behind his small force of 5,000 being able to withstand the 33,000-strong Ottoman force.
For his efforts, this statue and marker was erected while he was still alive, an honour of the highest level.
The inscriptions, in Latin, read:
