WASHING DAY
The electric washing machine became commonplace in the mid-twentieth century. Until that time, most homes relied on either electric, gas or wood-fired coppers in which clothes were boiled before being hauled out with a wooden stick and rinsed in two different tubs of cold water, fed through a wringer or mangle to remove the water and then hung on a line to dry. Scrubbing boards were used to aid in the removal of ingrained dirt.

This ingenious device is a home-made manually - operated wooden washing machine.

Under the lid is a space for a washtub where thick wooden dowelling acts as agitators to remove dirt, making the scrubbing board obsolete.

This old wooden washing machine is a nice example that is displayed in the German Migration Museum. The museum has an interesting history and highlights Hahndorf's pioneering families. This is a museum well worth visiting when in the area. Hahndorf is a small town that offers a botanical garden, several walking and hiking trails and is set in a picturesque mountain setting.
