History
In the late 1960s / early 1970s, Calgary identified a critical need for permanent and proper performance venues for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Theatre Calgary and Alberta Theatre Projects. By 1976, the Calgary Centre for Performing Arts was established as a registered charity and a massive fundraising effort began.
The local architectural firm of Raines, Finlayson, Barrett faced the challenge of incorporating two heritage buildings (Burns Building, circa 1917 and Public Building, circa 1932) into the new performing arts complex.
In July 1985, Calgary Centre for Performing Arts moved into the new building. For the next two months, staff wore construction helmets, as the building was still a construction site. The Center was officially opened September 14, 1985. Total construction cost was just over C$100 million.
