On an information plaque by the side of this cannon (to the right of the bench, when facing the bench) is the following information:
'THESE CANNON CAME FROM
THE FRENCH WARSHIP, THE BELLEISLE
WHICH, AFTER SACKING CARRICKFERGUS,
IRELAND,
WAS INTERCEPTED BY THE BRITISH FLEET
OFF BALLAAUGH SHORE IN 1760.

HAVING BEEN USED AS GATEPOSTS AT THE
ENTRANCE TO BALLACHRINK,
THE CANNON WERE DONATED TO THE
PARISH OF BRIDE
BY THE TRUSTEES OF THE ESTATE OF
MRS. K. A. A. HANKEY IN 2000 A.D.'
The Marechal de Belle-Isle was one of four ships in the French naval squadron which attacked the Irish Coast. Belle-Isle was a forty-six-gun frigate which was built in 1757. The captured French sailors were first sent to Ramsey the nearest large town in the north of the Island.
