La catedral de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora se encuentra en la ciudad española de Santander. Su estructura es principalmente gótica, si bien ha sido posteriormente ampliada y reformada.
Se trata de un conjunto histórico y monumental, construido entre finales del siglo XII y el XIV sobre el antiguo monasterio; en un principio sirvió como abadía, consagrada a San Emeterio y San Celedonio, conocida como la Abadía de los Cuerpos Santos. La iglesia se levantó sobre un cerro rodeado de agua, donde estuvo el asentamiento romano del Puerto de la Victoria, a partir del siglo VIII para guardar las reliquias de los mártires sacrificados en Calahorra cinco siglos antes. Sus cráneos fueron traídos por los que huían del dominio musulmán de la Península Ibérica.
La construcción de la planta inferior data de los primeros años del siglo XII, poco después de que se concediesen los fueros a la ciudad. Fue elevada a rango de colegiata en 1131 por el rey Alfonso VII, el Emperador, y comenzada la reconstrucción de los actuales edificios por iniciativa de Alfonso VIII, tras la concesión del fuero de Santander en 1187. La parte superior del edificio se construyó entre finales de ese siglo y comienzos del XIV. Al finalizar se construyó el claustro gótico. Posteriormente recibió el título de Iglesia Colegial de los Cuerpos Santos. Tiene especial interés la puerta principal, levantada hacia 1230, donde están labrados los primeros escudos del reino en que aparecen juntos castillos y leones, tras la unificación definitiva de León y de Castilla en tiempos de Fernando III, cuyo hijo Sancho fue abad del sitio. El templo es ampliado en los siglos XVI y XVII incorporándose nuevas capillas. En esta catedral estuvo el cementerio de la ciudad.
En 1754 se crea la diócesis de Santander, y la Colegiata de los Cuerpos Santos fue transformada en catedral por el papa Benedicto XIV, como cabeza del nuevo Obispado de Santander. Sufrió considerables desperfectos con motivo de la explosión de la dinamita del vapor Cabo Machichaco en 1893; tras sobrevivir a la Guerra Civil Española, sufrió en 1941 las consecuencias del incendio de Santander, quedando seriamente dañada y haciendo necesaria una reconstrucción y ampliación entre los años 1942 y 1953, cuando fue inaugurada; los arquitectos encargados de tal tarea fueron José Manuel Bringas y Juan José Resines del Castillo. La respetuosa restauración llevada a cabo sobre las partes afectadas permite hoy contemplar en todo su valor las destacadas cualidades arquitectónicas del monumento original.
Desde 2015 acoge el Centro de Interpretación de la Historia de Santander.
(ENG) The Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady is located in the Spanish city of Santander. Its structure is mainly Gothic, although it has been subsequently enlarged and reformed.
It is a historical and monumental complex, built between the end of the 12th century and the 14th century on the old monastery; at first it served as an abbey, consecrated to San Emeterio and San Celedonio, known as the Abbey of the Holy Bodies. The church was built on a hill surrounded by water, where the Roman settlement of the Puerto de la Victoria was, from the 8th century to keep the relics of the martyrs sacrificed in Calahorra five centuries before. Their skulls were brought by those who fled from the Muslim domain of the Iberian Peninsula.
The construction of the lower floor dates from the first years of the 12th century, shortly after the privileges were granted to the city. It was elevated to the rank of collegiate church in 1131 by King Alfonso VII, the Emperor, and the reconstruction of the current buildings was begun at the initiative of Alfonso VIII, after the granting of the Santander jurisdiction in 1187. The upper part of the building was built between the end of that century and the beginning of the fourteenth. At the end, the Gothic cloister was built. Later he received the title of Collegiate Church of the Holy Bodies. Of particular interest is the main gate, built around 1230, where the first shields of the kingdom are carved in which castles and lions appear together, after the definitive unification of León and Castile in the days of Fernando III, whose son Sancho was abbot of the site. The temple is expanded in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by incorporating new chapels. In this cathedral was the cemetery of the city.
In 1754 the diocese of Santander was created, and the Collegiate Church of the Holy Bodies was transformed into a cathedral by Pope Benedict XIV, as head of the new Bishopric of Santander. It suffered considerable damage due to the explosion of steam dynamite Cabo Machichaco in 1893; after surviving the Spanish Civil War, suffered in 1941 the consequences of the Santander fire, being seriously damaged and making necessary a reconstruction and expansion between 1942 and 1953, when it was inaugurated; The architects responsible for this task were José Manuel Bringas and Juan José Resines del Castillo. The respectful restoration carried out on the affected parts allows today to contemplate in all its value the outstanding architectural qualities of the original monument.
Since 2015, it has hosted the Interpretation Center for the History of Santander.
