"The geological interest of this zone was first recognised in 1947, when geologist Andreu Muntaner was serving his military service there and discovered its vast geological richness. Subsequently, the Es Carnatge outcrop, along with the nearby “ Campo de Tiro ” ( “ Shooting Range ” ) area, became the focal point of a number of scientific studies (Stearns and Thurber 1965; Cuerda 1975; Goy et al. 1993, 1997; Hillaire-Marcel et al. 1996; Zazo et al. 2003), as it is the best outcrop of the Quaternary, and specifically of the Upper Pleistocene in Majorca. The marès from the Es Carnatge quarries corresponds to the former dunes shaped during the cold episode formerly known as the Rissian Glaciation; it is therefore interpreted as having an age around 200,000 BP (Cuerda 1975). The dunes include remains of terraces and marine sediments with abundant Senegalese palaeofauna (Fig. 12), corresponding to the marine transgression in the Euthyrrhenian period (Silva et al. 2005). Thanks to the preservation of this site, a unique sequence is available for undertaking palaeoclimatic, palaeoeustatic and palaeoen- vironmental studies of the western Mediterranean (Bardají et al. 2008).
