Lisbon City Hall (Câmara Municipal) building has an enourmous Artistic and Architectural value and reflects the image of Lisbon and Portugal liberal, regenerator and republican values.
This building was built after the 1755 hearthquake that destroyed Lisbon and the architect was Eugénio dos Santos Carvalho.
The building was completely destroyed by a fire in the 19th November 1863.
A new building was built at theexact place between 1865 and 1880. Tgis one was designed by Domingues Parente da Silva but the façade was modified by the Enginier Ressano Garcia. It had a classical front sculptured by the french artist Anatole Calmels.
In its interior has a central staircase and a rich pictoric decoration.
In the 7th November 1996 another fire destroyed the upper floors and affected the ceilings and the paintings of the first floor.
During the reconstruction it was decided to make an approach to the original project of Domingos Parente, restauring the noble areas and make the upper floors more functional.
The actual building is the result of the work of the architect Domingos Parente da Silva, do sculptor Calmels, do architect José Luís Monteiro, Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, Pereira Cão, Malhoa among others that made it possible to respect the work os it´s predecessors and still include a new architecture in the building.
