Pioneer Courthouse Square (1984) is located between Yamhill and Morrison streets, SW Sixth Avenue and Broadway. Architect Willard "Will" Martin (Martin/Soderstrom/Matteson) designed the square and its waterfall fountain in 1983. Additional design elements by Douglas Macy, Robert Reynolds, Lee Kelly, Terence O'Donnell, and Spencer Gill.

This block has been the location of Portland's first schoolhouse (1858); the magnificent Queen Anne style Portland Hotel designed by the New York firm of McKim, Mead and White (material from the hotel's foundation is beneath the fountain on the west side of the square); and a sizable parking lot in the 1950s.

Known as "Portland's living room," this brick plaza has several sculptures, and a waterfall fountain with its imported purple tile. The square is the ultimate spot for people-watching and home to festivals and concerts.
