Drotning Gunnila hafver låta gjuta mig anno 1588.
Under konung Adolph Fredrich blifvit från min bräckelighet förnyad. Anno 1759.

På den andra sidan står:

Guten af Gerh. Meyer i Stockholm.

The Gunilla Bell hangs in the bell tower that is located on top of the bastion Styrbiskop at Uppsala Castle, and has become one of the symbols for Uppsala and its university.

The Gunilla Bell was poured in 1588, and was donated to the castle church at Uppsala Castle by Queen Gunilla, born Bielke, and was repoured in 1759. On one side of the bell are:

Queen Gunnila has gotta make me anno 1588.
Under King Adolph Fredrich was renewed from my fragility. Anno 1759.

On the other side are:

Poured by Gerh. Meyer in Stockholm.

The bell was originally a church bell for the former castle church in Uppsala Castle, and also the bell for the clockwork that was on the southeast castle tower, where the bell was also hanging. After the great city fires in Uppsala 1702, when a large part of Uppsala Castle and the cathedral were destroyed, it became a so-called care bell for Uppsala city and only then it was placed in a bell-stack at Styrbiskop. A care watch was found in many Swedish cities, calling "in care" (evening) and "out of care" (morning). When it was called in care, the townspeople had to go home and to rest, close the doors and shutters, and the tower guard in the church tower and the night watchman on the streets began their work. When the bell rang out of care in the morning there was a signal that the night was over and a new day had begun.

The bell hits a total of 150 beats at 06:00 and 21:00 every day, and received automated ringing in the 1980s.
