The Heritage Tree was created in 1998 as an adjunct to the Canada Winter Games of 1999 which were bases around Corner Brook. A 65', 9 ton, 5' thick cedar long was transported 7, 073 Km from Gold River, BC to Steady Brook. One hundred images representing the history and culture of Newfoundland and Labrador were designed by local artists Robin Howell and Michael Bonnell. Fifty relief images were chosen to be carved into the log by five local carvers: Scott Butt, Bernard Benoit, Colin Mahoney, Norman Young and Craig Strang.
Images include tributes to Viking explorers, John Cabot, settlers, the military heritage, politician, industry, maritime history, commerce, native animals, etc.
In 2004 the Heritage Tree received the Manning Award for its commemoration of significant aspects of Newfoundland and Labrador history. It is considered one of the top 10 attractions in the Corner Brook area.
