St Mark's Basilica is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice. It is located at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco.
The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark (Italian: Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco), commonly known as Saint Mark's Basilica (Italian: Basilica di San Marco), is the most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture.
For its opulent design, gold ground mosaics, and its status as a symbol of Venetian wealth and power, from the 11th century on, the basilic has been known by the nickname Chiesa d'Oro (Church of gold).
Saint Mark the Evangelist is the traditionally ascribed author of the Gospel of Mark. Mark is said to have founded the Church of Alexandria, one of the most important episcopal sees of Early Christianity. His feast day is celebrated on April 25, and his symbol is the winged lion.
The statue of St. Mark is surrounded with angels. Underneath is a winged lion, the symbol of the saint and of Venice. The evangelist is shown preaching with his right hand raised and the other hand holding a book facing out.
