La crête des Pénitent peut se suivre sur un étroit sentier. L'un des points fort de ce tracé est l'arche naturelle à peut près au milieu de la partie supérieure.

FR Le phénomène
Une formation géologique très particulière, nommée les Pénitents, est un site classé depuis 1941. Elle occupe 27 hectares. Ce nom provient de la forme d'une masse de poudingue très découpée, à côté du village, qui évoque un groupe de moines coiffés de capuches pointues. Bien que la façade des Pénitents évoque des formes rocheuses plus ou moins coniques, il s'agit d'un ensemble de crêtes et de minuscules canyons, s'interrompant simultanément sur un plan vertical. Cette formation s'étire sur 2,5 km, et l’abrupt le plus haut atteint 114 mètres. Celle-ci est le résultat de l'érosion sur le substrat rocheux, qui possède des irrégularités de cohésion, et conduit donc à des zones proéminentes et à d'autres surcreusées. Ce substrat est la « formation de Valensole », conglomérat formé par une accumulation de débris subalpins au cours de la fin du Miocène et du Pliocène, épais de plusieurs centaines de mètres.

La légende
On les appelle les Pénitents des Mées en raison de leur silhouette ; d'après la légende, ils représentent les moines de la Montagne de Lure qui ont été pétrifiés (au sens propre) par saint Donat au temps des invasions sarrasines pour s'être épris de belles jeunes femmes mauresques qu'un seigneur avait ramenées d'une croisade.

A very particular geological formation, named the Penitents, is a classified site since 1941. It occupies 27 hectares. This name comes from the shape of a mass of pudding cut out, next to the village, which evokes a group of monks wearing pointed hoods. Although the facade of Penitents evokes rocky forms more or less conical, it is a set of ridges and tiny canyons, interrupting simultaneously on a vertical plane. This formation stretches for 2.5 km, and the highest abrupt reaches 114 meters. This is the result of erosion on the bedrock, which has cohesive irregularities, and therefore leads to prominent and overcrown areas. This substrate is the "Valensole Formation", conglomerate formed by an accumulation of subalpine debris during the late Miocene and Pliocene, several hundred meters thick.

The legend
They are called the Penitents of the Mees because of their silhouette; according to legend, they represent the monks of the Montagne de Lure who were petrified (literally) by Donat at the time of the Saracen invasions for being enamored of beautiful young Moorish women that a lord had brought back from a crusade.

Puddingstone, also known as either pudding stone or plum-pudding stone, is a popular name applied to a conglomerate that consists of distinctly rounded pebbles whose colors contrast sharply with the color of the finer-grained, often sandy, matrix or cement surrounding them. The rounded pebbles and the sharp contrast in color gives this type of conglomerate the appearance of a raisin or Christmas pudding.
