The "Engelsloch" (angel's hole) is located on the burr of the Engelsley. The climbing route over the summit burr leads over the rock curve. In contrast to the "Teufelsloch" (devil's hole) on the opposite burr the "Engelsloch" is of natural origin from erosion.
The arch spans approx. 4m at the top. The inside curve amounts to about 1.60m.
The Engelsley is a ridge from fossilized seabed. The mountain originated when the Ahr dug itselve in its today's riverbed.
The rocks of the Rhenish slate mountains of the Ahrtal are the result of marine sediments of the lower devon period (~410 million years). Slate is a pelitic sedimentary rock and consists of clay/tone minerals.
Geologic activity during the variszic orogenese in the palaeocoic period tilted the layers and put them vertically.
