Ce monument se situe à l'intersection des rues Puits en Sock et Surlet, près du rond-point qui porte officiellement le nom de « rue du Pont Saint-Nicolas ».
La statue, œuvre de Joseph Zomers, montre la Wallonie sous les traits d'une hiercheuse qui brandit Tchantchès tel un flambeau de la liberté.
Marionnette et personnage folklorique, Tchantchès (traduction en wallon du prénom François) est la personnification du vrai liégeois têtu, buveur et frondeur. Selon la légende, Tchantchès est né en 760 entre deux pavés du Djus-d’la-Moûse (le quartier populaire d’Outremeuse). Les braves gens qui le trouvèrent furent émerveillés de l’entendre chanter dès son entrée dans la vie : « Allons, la mère Gaspard, encore un verre ». Très vite, notre Tchantchès s’est révélé être un sacré gamin, bon compagnon mais forte tête. Nanesse sa crapôde, est courageuse, aimante, mais elle ne s’en laisse pas conter par Tchantchès.
Caractère : prototype du vrai Liégeois : mauvaise tête, esprit frondeur, grand gosier, ennemi du faste et des grandes cérémonies, farouchement indépendant, mais cœur d'or et prompt à s'enflammer pour toutes les nobles causes.
This monument is located at the intersection of Puits en Sock and Surlet streets, near the roundabout officially known as the "rue du Pont Saint-Nicolas".
The statue, the Artwork of Joseph Zomers, shows Wallonia in the guise of a wizard who brandishes Tchantches as a torch of freedom.
Tchantchès, a puppet and folklore character (his name is the Walloon translation of “Francis”), is the personification of the true, stubborn, hard drinking and sulking person from Liege. Legend has it that Tchantchès was born in 760 between two cobble stones in the Djus-d’la-Moûse (lit. “beyond the Meuse River” in the local dialect, i.e. the popular district of Outremeuse). The good people who found him were amazed to hear him sing out as soon as he entered the world and ask for a glass of pèkèt. Tchantchès quickly turned into quite a kid, a good companion but also a very headstrong person. Nanesse his female companion, is courageous and affectionate, but does not allow herself to be taken in by Tchantchès.
Character: a prototype of the true Liegeois: a bad head, a rebellious spirit, a great throat, an enemy of pomp and ceremonies, fiercely independent, but a heart of gold and quick to ignite for all noble causes.
