The bronze and marble Independence Monument commemorates the 25th anniversary of Malta’s independence from the United Kingdom, which occurred on September 21, 1964. The 8.5 meter high monument features the allegorical figure of a 2 meter high barefoot woman dressed in flowing robes, a piece of which is wrapped around her right wrist. Her right arm is down and held slightly away from her right side. She is walking forward with her right foot in front of her left foot and carrying the national flag in her raised left hand. The flag is waving in the wind behind her head. Beneath her feet are 2 meter high abstract bands representing the shackles of the past from which she is freeing herself.
The bronze monument rests on a 4.5 meter high marble base. Three circular, progressively smaller, steps lead up to a rectangular base which is inscribed:
I DIPENDENZA
21-IX-1964
The monument was created by Maltese sculptor John Bonnici, and cast at the Italian Foundry Badalotti. The monument was dedicated 25 years after independence on the September 23, 1989 by President Dr. Censu Tabone.
