The "Klosterlandschaft Heisterbach" is the remains of a former Cistercian's abbey. The abbey was founded in 1192. In 1237 the new building of the abbey church was consecrated. In 1327 the complete arrangement was finished.
With the secularization the abbey was dissolved in 1803. The government tried in vain to sell the area. The church was sold in 1809 for demolition.
Graf Wilhelm Ernst zur Lippe-Biesterfeld acquired the area in 1820 and allowed to put on an English scenery garden. Also the church ruin was included.

In 1984 the endowment "Kloster Heisterbach" was founded with the aim to maintain and investigate the cultural heritage.
The endowment pursues the goal to receive the former abbey Heisterbach as a cultural-historical monument in the consciousness of the general public.

In 2001 investigation results were published to historical, archaeological, regional and business development of the former abbey area. The historical periods in the cloister scenery and important historical tracks should be made experienceable and learnable for the visitors. Besides, the restoration of the historical spatial structure was in the foreground.

Today "Klosterlandschaft Heisterbach" is a very popular place for strollers, travellers and cyclists who visit the arrangement.
