Paúl da Serra in the municipal county of Ponta do Sol, Madeira, is the largest and most extensive plateau of Madeira about 24 square kilometres (9.3 sq mi), with an altitude average of about 1,500 metres (4,900 ft).

On this high plateau, the construction of this cairn was begun in 1963, which was completed in 1968 with the erection of the Madonna figure.
In addition to the figure of "Nossa senhora da serra", a huge rosary decorates the cairn and it became a place of pilgrimage and liturgical celebrations.
