Diogo Alves was a thief and an Assassin that used the Aguas Livres Acqueduct in Lisbon to do it´s crimes.

Diogo Alves was a Spanish that came to live in Lisbon and executed several horrible crimes from 1836 to 1839 when he finaly get caught and sentenced to death by hanging.
He managed to get a false key of the Aguas Livres Aqueduct in Lisbon where he hide himself waiting for his victims.
The acqueduct was used to bring water from Lisbon boudaries to the city and was also used a bridge from one side of the Alcantara Valley to the other.
After robbing them he threw the bodies from the top of acqueduct to the valley.
At the time they even though of a set of unexplainable suicides and it took a lot of deaths to the authorities to find out that it was the work of a criminal. In one family there were 4 victims. In the summer of 1837 there were 76 victims.
He was the last condemned to death in Portugal in 1841.
His story has intrigued the cientists who took advantageof the hanging to study him and try to understand the origin of his evil.His head was cut ans studied and is still keptt in a glass jar in the Medicine Museum.
The Acqueduct is a National Monument since 1910.
T visit it you must go to the Calçada da Quintinha Street, EPAL Gate in Campolide Lisbon.
It´s open from 1 Mar to 30 Nov between 10h and 18h. it´s closed on Sundays and hollydays.
