The coordinates are the spot where the U.S.S. Cairo rests as a partially reconstructed Civil War museum piece. It is located in the Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi. In 1862 this iron clad vessel was sunk in the Yazoo River on its way to fight a battle seven miles north of Vicksburg. In 1959 the first portions of the ship were raised from its grave.

The wonderful exhibit is worth a visit. Portions of the ship were reconstructed to give a feel for the size of the ship and how it was constructed, but yet it still shows very well how it looked after sitting at the bottom of the river for almost 100 years.

The ship is fully covered by a roof to protect it from weather and sun. There is a walking area around the entire ship that takes you very close to the hull. There are lots of information boards telling you about each portion. The best part is you can actually walk inside the ship. The nearby museum shows a video of how the U.S.S. Cairo was raised from the river and has many of the artifacts that were recovered from inside the vessel.

There is no admission charge to the ship itself, but there is an admission charge to enter the park where the ship is located.
