"Doric column surmounted by stone ball. Medieval base with seven sided flight of steps.
Original cross erected by Ralph Bassett who received permission in 1257 from Henry III to hold a weekly market in this place and on the Eve of St. Faith a fair took place. The cross was reconstructed on its old base in 1831, commemorating the coronation of William IV. (The base is still owned by Nottinghamshire County Council.)
Of historic importance as it was first constructed in 1257 (at the centre of the village where four lanes meet) to mark the conferring of 'town' status (received grant of a weekly market and thrice yearly fair). Rebuilt in 1831 on the original base to commemorate the coronation of William IV. Fifteen feet in height, medieval steps surmounted by Doric shaft with a square head and ball. The cross was, in 1933, the first National Trust acquisition in the county- a gift from Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings."
