This statue of Leif Eriksson, located in front of the Hallgrímskirkja (English: Church of Hallgrímur) in Reykjavík, Iceland, commemorates the 1000th anniversary of the Icelandic parliament, which is said to be the founding of the nation of Iceland.

"The statue of explorer Leif Eriksson (c. 970 – c. 1020) by Alexander Stirling Calder in front of the church predates its construction. It was a gift from the United States in honor of the 1930 Alþingi Millennial Festival, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Iceland's parliament at Þingvellir in 930 AD."

"The foundation of the Icelandic parliament is said to be the founding of the nation of Iceland, and the first parliamentary proceedings in the summer of 930 laid the ground for a common cultural heritage and national identity. Þingvellir played a central role in the history of the country, and its history runs almost parallel with the history of the Icelandic Commonwealth."
