It flows from its resurgent source in Ouhans (20 km north of Pontarlier, in Haut-Doubs), in Parcey (10 km south of Dole, in the Jura), where it flows into the Doubs in The Girard Island National Nature Reserve, after a 122.2 kilometers
Gushing from a cavern 60 m wide and 30 m high excavated in an overhanging wall over 100 in height, the source of the Loue is nothing but a majestic resurgence of the Doubs.
This resurgence was discovered in 1901, after the Pernod de Pontarlier factory was struck by lightning. A few days after the Doubs, it was the Loue which took a green color, and perfumed itself with absinthe.
It is one of the major natural sites of the Doubs, laid out and decorated with didactic panels to better understand the natural spectacle that is offered to the gaze.
From the source, the trail allows to descend the deep gorges of the Loue, left bank, and reach the electrical factory and then the village of Mouthier-Haute-Pierre (about 6km - 2h).

Jaillissant d’une caverne large de 60 m et haute de 30 m creusée dans une paroi surplombante de plus de 100 de hauteur, la source de la Loue n’est autre qu’une majestueuse résurgence du Doubs.
Cette résurgence fut découverte en 1901, après que l'usine Pernod de Pontarlier fut frappée par la foudre. Quelques jours après le Doubs, c'est la Loue qui prit une couleur verte, et se parfuma à l'absinthe.
C’est l’un des sites naturels majeurs du Doubs, aménagé et agrémenté de panneaux didactiques pour mieux comprendre le spectacle naturel qui s’offre au regard.
De la source, le sentier permet de descendre les profondes gorges de la Loue, rive gauche, et d'atteindre l'usine électrique puis le village de Mouthier-Haute-Pierre (6km - 2h environ).
