"La Ville de Nîmes souhaitait depuis longtemps donner un écrin à la hauteur de l’exceptionnelle qualité de son patrimoine antique et de ses collections archéologiques. D’un côté, le Musée archéologique actuel méritait plus d’espace et une présentation innovante, de l’autre, le site de l’îlot Grill, en plein coeur de la ville, face aux Arènes, laissé à l’abandon depuis vingt ans, devait trouver une fonction patrimoniale symbolique et pertinente.
Les découvertes récentes lors de fouilles préventives d’une domus et de deux mosaïques, dont celle de Penthée dans un état de conservation admirable, ont accéléré les évènements.
En juin 2011, la Ville de Nîmes a donc lancé un concours international d’architecture pour la réalisation d’un grand Musée de la romanité.
Les défis étaient nombreux : imaginer un musée ouvert sur la ville, qui autorise un libre accès vers un nouveau jardin archéologique autour des vestiges de remparts antiques, imaginer un musée qui permette aux Nîmois de s’approprier leur identité bimillénaire, imaginer un musée qui contribue plus largement à faire reconnaître au monde la singularité et les richesses de notre ville.
Le projet lauréat est celui d'Elizabeth et Christian de Portzamparc.
Le bâtiment et la muséographie ont été conçus par Elizabeth de Portzamparc, l'urbanisme par Christian de Portzamparc. La Ville accueille ainsi un 3ème prix Pritzker, la plus prestigieuse récompense mondiale de la profession.
Nîmes, qui défend ardemment son inscription au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, ne pouvait pas exprimer plus clairement son ambition.

"The city of Nîmes has long sought to provide a setting worthy of the exceptional quality of its ancient heritage and its archaeological collections. In June 2011, the City of Nîmes launched an international architectural competition for the creation of a large Romanesque Museum.
Challenges were many: imagine a museum open to the city, which allows free access to a new archaeological garden around the remnants of ancient ramparts, imagine a museum that allows the Nîmes to appropriate their bimillenary identity, imagine a museum that contributes More broadly, to make the world recognize the singularity and richness of our city.
The winning project is that of Elizabeth and Christian de Portzamparc.
The building and the museography were designed by Elizabeth de Portzamparc, urbanism by Christian de Portzamparc. The City is hosting a third Pritzker Prize, the world's most prestigious award for the profession.
Nîmes, who fiercely defends its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage, could not express its ambition more clearly.
