Léopold Sédar Senghor, born October 9, 1906 in Joal, Senegal, and died on December 20, 2001 in Verson, France, is a French poet, writer and statesman, then Senegalese and first president of the Republic of Senegal 1960-1980) and was also the first African to sit at the French Academy. He was also a minister in France before the independence of his country.
After being appointed Prince of the Poets in 1978, he was elected to the French Academy on June 2, 1983, in the 16th Armchair, where he succeeded the Duke of Lévis-Mirepoix. He is the first African to sit at the French Academy.
As a student, he created with the Martinique-born Aimé Césaire and the Guyanese Léon Gontran Damas the contestant magazine L'Étudiant noir in 1934. It is in these pages that he will express for the first time his conception of negritude .

Alors qu'il était étudiant, il créa en compagnie du martiniquais Aimé Césaire et du guyanais Léon Gontran Damas la revue contestataire L'Étudiant noir en 1934. C'est dans ces pages qu'il exprimera pour la première fois sa conception de la négritude.
